Research
Inspiration for LIFECHO started during my studies at Aalto University, where I made a Master's thesis on the topic "Measuring people flow and utilizing people flow data in shopping centers: Current situation and future view."
The study examines various people flow measurement techniques, from traditional photocells to advanced 3D cameras, WiFi tracking, and demographic cameras. It explores how this data is applied in shopping centers for purposes like Demand-Controlled Ventilation (DCV), optimizing maintenance, and enhancing marketing. A key theme is the evolution of shopping centers into experience hubs, where creating a specific atmosphere through lighting and sound is crucial for success. The thesis also addresses the importance of privacy and GDPR compliance in implementing these technologies.
Main Conclusions: The research concludes that people flow data is directly correlated with sales and is essential for a shopping center's profitability. The future of the field lies in cheaper, wireless sensors, 5G connectivity, and sophisticated data analytics. Key future opportunities identified include automating building maintenance and developing dynamic rental pricing models based on real-time footfall data. Ultimately, success depends on measuring and actively improving the customer experience.
